I can only repeat much of the praise in the other 38 reviews before mine. This is a very complete, very detailed and fascinating telling of a pivotal period in Japanese history. On a personal level I am a Buddhist but also a collector of vintage & antique Buddhist temple/altar items. This book helps me match my items to their place in history as well as the rolls of Buddhism & Shinto under The Meiji.It's a great read, especially if this period of Japanese history really interests you. This is a fascinating book. It strikes a masterful balance between very personal details about the emperor and his entourage on the one hand and the great events of the time on the other. The effect of the details is that the reader feels as though he is in the room with the protagonists during major political events. In the end, the main characters almost feel like family. At the same time, the author takes you through the amazing transformation that the Meiji period was and all its turns and twists and the uncertainty for those involved. I’ve never before read a history book that made events come so alive. Heartily recommended.
